Thank you for considering our research community. We offer the research higher degrees Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

We have just over 100 research higher degree students studying a diverse range of research areas in education in various study modes. About one-third are international students, adding a rich, culturally diverse dimension to our research community. Your colleagues can be a great resource and support to you during your time studying with us.

Research Higher Degrees are managed through the UQ Graduate School. Students, once enrolled, are administered in accordance with UQ RHD candidature and progression and development policy.

Please note that your prior study/experience must meet the University's requirements for research content. Refer to the UQ Graduate School site regarding minimum entry requirements.

If you are considering applying to study in our Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program, you should first ensure you are familiar with the University's admissions process. This process involves a number of stages, so you are advised to apply well-ahead of the time you hope to commence your studies, or well in-advance of the closing date for scholarships for which you are hoping to be considered. The process is detailed via the Online Enquiry/Application link below.

All Research Higher Degree enquiries must be submitted via the UQ Graduate School Online Enquiry/Application form. Once your enquiry is received, your prior experience is assessed and your research proposal is considered. If appropriate, your enquiry will then be considered by potential academic supervisor(s), and this may result in your enquiry continuing to a full application.

Before you can progress to the next step of the Online Enquiry/Application process, You will be required to nominate a supervisor online.

Although you may choose to make contact with potential supervisor/s prior to submitting your Online Enquiry/Application, it is not compulsory for you to do so at this stage (for School of Education applicants).

Within the Online Enquiry/Application, please identify at least two academics (refer to the links below) who you believe most closely match your proposed research topic or methodology.

We will consider your suggested supervisors, your uploaded documents and your proposed research area.  If your enquiry is to proceed further, we will make contact with potential supervisors for you and let you know the outcome.

Associate Professor Susan Rowland, Dr Kelly Matthews, Dr Christine Slade, and Dr Deanne Gannaway from UQ's Institute for Teaching and Learning Innovation (ITaLI) are also potential supervisors for RHD students enrolling with the School of Education.

You must include, at a minimum, the following documents with your Online Enquiry/Application:

  1. academic CV
  2. brief research proposal (2-3 page maximum)
  3. scanned academic transcript/s (including key to grading scheme and/or Supplement) for prior study, so we can confirm your attainment of minimum entry requirements/relevant research background

Make sure your research proposal conveys that:

  • the problem you propose to investigate is significant
  • the method you plan to use is suitable and feasible
  • the results will make an original contribution to knowledge in the field
  • your level of academic writing is of a Research Higher Degree standard.

Please note that your enquiry can only be considered if you include this information, as well as the other information that is requested on the Online Enquiry/Application site.

We shall endeavour to respond to your enquiry as soon as possible but you should allow at least four weeks for the enquiry process to be completed. An additional four weeks may be required for the full UQ application process to be completed.

Because we receive a large number of applications, the selection process is highly competitive. A response may indicate that supervision has been identified and your enquiry will continue as a full application. Enquiries/applications may be declined for many reasons including the following:

  • supervision is not available
  • resources are not available
  • project is not a strategic fit
  • School of Education requirements have not been met.
