International students should also check the UQ International site for information on how to apply, what to do on arrival, and tips for managing life and study while at The University of Queensland.

If you are considering applying to study in our Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program, you should first ensure you are familiar with the University's admissions process. This process involves a number of stages, so you are advised to apply well-ahead of the time you hope to commence your studies, or well in-advance of the closing date for scholarships for which you are hoping to be considered. The process is detailed via the Online Enquiry/Application link below.

All Higher Degree by Research enquiries must be submitted via the UQ Graduate School Online Enquiry/Application form. Once your enquiry is received, your prior experience is assessed and your research proposal is considered. If appropriate, your enquiry will then be considered by potential academic supervisor(s), and this may result in your enquiry continuing to a full application.

Before you can progress to the next step of the Online Enquiry/Application process, you will be required to nominate at least one supervisor online.  As part of your uploaded documents, please include an email from the School of Education academic who has confirmed that they will supervise your study should your application be successful.

In addition, the School of Education requests that you please identify at least one more academic who you believe most closely matches your proposed research topic or methodology.  Please refer to the links below.

We will consider your suggested supervisors, your uploaded documents and your proposed research area.  If your enquiry is to proceed further, we will make contact with potential supervisors to confirm their availability and let you know the outcome.  Each applicant must have two confirmed supervisors before any HDR application at UQ can proceed.

Other supervisory staff

Please note that Associate Professor Susan Rowland, Dr Kelly Matthews, Dr Christine Slade, Dr Deanne Gannaway and A/Prof Pedro Isaias from UQ's Institute for Teaching and Learning Innovation (ITaLI), and Dr Anna Hogan, Dr Michalis Stylianou and Dr Eimear Enright from the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences are also potential supervisors for HDR students enrolling with the School of Education.

You must include, at a minimum, the following documents with your Online Enquiry/Application:

  1. academic CV
  2. brief research proposal (2-3 page maximum)Please note that the Online Application system will not prompt you to include a Proposal, but the School of Education cannot continue the process without one.
  3. scanned academic transcript/s (including key to grading scheme and/or Supplement) for prior study, so we can confirm your attainment of minimum entry requirements/relevant research background

Make sure your research proposal conveys that:

  • the problem you propose to investigate is significant
  • the method you plan to use is suitable and feasible
  • the results will make an original contribution to knowledge in the field
  • your level of academic writing is of a Higher Degree by Research standard.

Please note that your enquiry can only be considered if you include this information, as well as the other information that is requested on the Online Enquiry/Application site.

We shall endeavour to respond to your enquiry as soon as possible but you should allow at least four weeks for the enquiry process to be completed. An additional four weeks may be required for the full UQ application process to be completed.

Because we receive a large number of applications, the selection process is highly competitive. A response may indicate that supervision has been identified and your enquiry will continue as a full application. Enquiries/applications may be declined for many reasons including the following:

  • supervision is not available
  • resources are not available
  • project is not a strategic fit
  • School of Education requirements have not been met.
