Higher Degrees by Research

Thank you for considering our research community. We offer Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs as higher degrees by research.

We have just over 100 higher degree by research students studying in a diverse range of research areas in education by various study modes. About one-third are international students, adding a rich, culturally diverse dimension to our research community.

Higher Degrees by Research are managed through the UQ Graduate School. Students, once enrolled, are administered in accordance with UQ HDR Candidature Progression Policy.

Please note that your prior study and experience must meet the University's requirements for research content. Refer to the UQ Graduate School site regarding minimum entry requirements.

All Higher Degree by Research enquiries must be submitted via the UQ Graduate School online application form. Once your enquiry is received, your prior experience is assessed and your research proposal is considered. If appropriate, your enquiry will then be considered by potential academic supervisor(s), and this may result in your enquiry continuing to a full application.

Your application will be denied (withdrawn) if you do not follow full procedures and upload all the following documents in your online application:

  1. Academic CV
  2. Brief research proposal (2-3 page maximum, refer below*)Please note that the Online Application system will not prompt you to include a Proposal, but the School of Education cannot process your Application without this.
  3. Scanned academic transcript(s) (including key to grading scheme and/or supplement) for prior study, so we can confirm your attainment of minimum entry requirements/relevant research background.
  4. Email from School of Education Academic(s) confirming their endorsement to provide supervision (e.g. Principal Advisory, Associate Advisor).
  5. Evidence of meeting English Language Proficiency requirements.
  6. Two completed Referee Reports.

* Please ensure your research proposal conveys that:

  • the problem you propose to investigate is significant
  • the method you plan to use is suitable and feasible
  • the results will make an original contribution to knowledge in the field
  • your level of academic writing is of a Higher Degree by Research standard.

When submitting an Online Application, you are required to nominate at least one supervisor, including an email from the School of Education academic, who has confirmed that they will supervise your study should your application be successful. Please note, your application will not be processed without this supporting document.

In addition, please identify at least one more academic who you believe most closely matches your proposed research topic or methodology. Each applicant must have two confirmed supervisors before any HDR application at UQ can proceed. Please refer to the following links:.
