LANTITE

In 2016, the Australian Government mandated that all undergraduate and postgraduate teacher preparation students must pass the LANTITE (Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students) assessment in order to meet their respective program requirements.

In 2024, AITSL advised that demonstrated First Nations language proficiency is an acceptable alternative standard to LANTITE.

LANTITE is an assessment used to evaluate the personal literacy and numeracy skills of education students seeking to become teachers. It is designed to ensure graduating teachers are equipped to meet teaching demands.

All students enrolled in the following UQ undergraduate and postgraduate teacher preparation programs are required to successfully complete LANTITE as a program requirement, in order to graduate:

Bachelor of Education (Primary)
Bachelor of Education (Secondary) dual degree programs
Bachelor of Health, Sport and Physical Education (Honours)
Master of Teaching (Primary)
Master of Teaching (Secondary)

How much does LANTITE cost?

When do I sit LANTITE?

LANTITE is set by ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research) and is offered during four test windows each calendar year. Students must register online to sit the test at a test centre or by remote proctoring.

Students complete the test in two parts; Literacy test (two hours) and Numeracy test (two hours). It is recommended that the test be completed in one day (commencing with the two hour test with one hour break time, followed by the final two hour test).

When do I get my Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) results?

ACER will advise you of your test results within one month of completing the test.

What happens if I fail either one or both of the components of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE)?

If you fail the test, you can register again and sit the next test.

You have 3 attempts to sit the LANTITE test. If you have sat the test and failed 3 times, contact the School of Education for advice.

What do I do if i have a practicum when the LANTITE test is scheduled?

If you will find it difficult to complete LANTITE, check the ACER LANTITE website for alternative test dates. If there is no alternative date, you'll need to arrange a make-up day at your practicum, to replace the day you miss sitting the exam.

How do I demonstrate First Nations language proficiency in order to be exempt from LANTITE?

If you are proficient in an Australian First Nations language, please complete the two forms below and submit them to the School of Education for consideration by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSIS) Unit:
