History

Learn more about the research and history of Down Syndrome in Queensland.

The program began tracking all babies born with Down syndrome in the late 1970s in the greater Brisbane region, with a matched cohort of typically developing children. This coincided with the decade when routine institutionalisation of babies was discontinued, and so the study has tracked the first generation of people with Down syndrome to be cared for by their families, educated at school, and now living in the adult community.
