Global Strategic Partnerships visit to Singapore

4 June 2019

During the week of 22nd April, 2019, Dr Vicente Reyes, Dr Obaid Hamid and Assoc. Prof. Ian Hardy visited Singapore as part of a UQ Humanities and Social Sciences Global Strategic Partnerships Fund.  The fund enables scholars to engage with leading international academic, government and industry partners to foster collaborative research, teaching and engagement. As part of the trip, they visited the National Institute of Education (NIE) at the Nanyang Technological University. This is the principal university involved in teacher preparation and educational research in Singapore. They also visited the Academy of Singapore Teachers at the Ministry of Education, and Singapore Skills Future within the Ministry of Manpower. In addition, they visited three schools – Victoria Junior College, Bedok Green Primary School and CHIJ-Toa Payoh Primary School – to learn more about how primary and secondary schools were engaging with current educational reforms in the Singaporean context. Vicente, Obaid and Ian have submitted an Australian Research Council application which they hope will enable them to conduct more systematic research in Singapore (as well as Australia, and Bangladesh) in the future. The visit is the first in what we hope will be an ongoing collaboration between UQ, NIE, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Manpower, and schools in Singapore.
