Purpose
The purpose of these guidelines is to provide information to staff and Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students about the Post-Thesis Fellowships within the School of Education.
These guidelines align with the Faculty of HASS Policy on Post-Thesis Fellowships and with the UQ Policy 5.20.15 Honorary and Adjunct Title Holders as published in the Policy & Procedures Library (PPL).
Scope and Coverage
These guidelines apply to all eligible School of Education HDR students.
Background
Prior to 2016 organisational units in the HASS Faculty operated a variety of schemes to assist HR students after completion of their HDR theses. These guidelines seek to provide a consistent and equitable basis for the provision of assistance to all eligible HDR students in the HASS Faculty.
Aims
Post-Thesis Fellowships are designed to support HDR students to write up their research findings after they have completed their theses. As well as the obvious good of disseminating research findings, the scheme seeks to support former HDR students as they position themselves for the employment market and to assist academic units in maximising their research outputs and research profile.
Eligibility
HDR students may apply to hold the fellowship following examination and completion of any necessary revisions, up to 12 months post-thesis completion. Applications for the fellowship must be submitted within 12 months of post-completion of the thesis.
Tenure
Post-Thesis Fellowships will be awarded for a period of twelve months. Extension requests will be considered pending submission of a progress report.
Benefits
Post-Thesis Fellows will be awarded the status of Honorary Research Fellow (Level A)* . As detailed in PPL 5.20.15 this entitles the Fellow to:
- use of facilities and resources of the unit as appropriate by arrangement with the Head, and subject to the availability of space within the School;
- use of the University Libraries; and
- access to research or teaching support and resources as negotiated with the Head.
*In line with PPL 5.20.15 (Section 5.4), Fellows “will contribute to the work of the organisational unit in a voluntary capacity” and thus do not receive a stipend and are not able to undertake paid employment within The University of Queensland.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Applicants should complete both the application form and the Nomination Form for Adjunct and Honorary Appointments Level A-D and submit these, along with a detailed publication plan and full CV or HDR Academic Portfolio, to the School Postgraduate Coordinator. Where the applicant is applying after examination, examiners’ reports should also be attached. It is important that applicants discuss their publication plans with their proposed mentor before submitting the application. Applications may be submitted at any time, as this is a rolling scheme to accommodate the varying dates of student completion of theses.
The Selection Committee will comprise the School Director of Research and the Postgraduate Coordinator.
Selection Criteria
Selection will be based on:
- The applicant’s demonstrated ability to contribute to the research outputs and research culture of the School.
- The feasibility and quality of the publication plan.
Approval process
If the application is approved by the Selection Committee then the application will be forwarded, along with a Nomination Form for Adjunct and Honorary Appointments Level A-D and associated documents, to the Faculty Human Resources team for approval by the Executive Dean.
Further Information and Contact
Holders of Post-Thesis Fellowships are expected to participate actively in the research activities of the School (for example, participating in research seminars, reading groups, social events).
Holders of Post-Thesis Fellowships are required to acknowledge UQ as their affiliation on any research outputs generated during their time as a Fellow.
