Indigenous-led education research in the School of Education

The recent release of The University of Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research and Innovation Strategy 2021 - 2025 outlines UQ’s commitment to the advancement of Indigenous led-research excellence. This session will showcase current Indigenous-led education research in the School of Education.

The session will be led by Dr Marnee Shay, Senior Lecturer, who has a number of category 1 and 2 externally funded research projects, including a new ARC Discovery Indigenous ‘Co-designing Indigenous Education Policy in Queensland’. Marnee’s portfolio of research is in the fields of Indigenous education and methodologies with three key focus areas: youth studies, Indigenous education (policy and practice) and flexi schooling. Ren Perkins will present on his PhD study that centres the voices of Indigenous teachers on what keeps Indigenous teachers staying in the profession. Beth Madsen will share her PhD project ‘Built In or Bolt On? A Policy Analysis of Non-Government Programs in Indigenous Education’. As Indigenous researchers in the school, they will share their visions, aspirations and ideas for implementation of the strategy’s objectives at a school level.
